The 2013/2014 Antarctic season is quickly drawing to a close with a number of recent movements to and from the frozen south being conducted. Resources have been stretched as wheeled aircraft activity on the ice has been severely restricted as a result of poor "runway" conditions and this has seen no Boeing C17 activity take place since 26 November when 10-0216 made a trip from Christchurch to the Ice Runway and back as ICE19.
The US military C130's also had their operations curtailed as a result of very inclement summer time weather which bought severe storm activity to the US base for a number of days. However the fleet has since started its migration home to New York and 03 March saw 83-0491, 83-0492 and 76-3302 depart Christchurch for Pago Pago then two days later 92-1094 and 92-1095 departed over the same route. Two more LC130's are expected to depart in the coming days.
Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft have been conducting flights between Christchurch and the ice this past week with Boeing 757-200 NZ7572 and Lockheed C130 NZ7001 being noted on more than one occasion trundling back and forth.
Skytrader Airbus A319CJ VH-VHD made its most recent landing at the Australian base located at Wilkins on 26 February with its trip starting and finishing at Hobart. Interestingly the aircraft made another flight south on 02 March departing from Hobart and heading down to 64 south before heading north to Melbourne.
United States Air Force Boeing C17 Globemaster III 94-0067 arrived at Christchurch on the morning of 07 March from Hickam and Pago Pago as "Reach 981" and it is forecast to depart northbound tomorrow with another C17 visit expected during the course of next week.
