Boeing 777 v A1GP Car

Text via VJ and photo from Colin. ZK-OKD was crewed by Captain's David Morgan and David Allard and Air NZ CEO Rob Fyfe accompanied the aircraft.

Round 1

New Zealand Alpha 1 holding short and began to taxi onto taxiway Alpha 1 Alpha and then was
cleared for takeoff on Runway 23L as was Black Beauty cleared to roll on parallel runway
23R, ZK-OKD got a head start by rolling, the car remained idle for a few seconds before
starting to move, ZK-OKD began to gain power for it to rotate the car managed to catch up
by this time New Zealand Alpha 1 was airborne. New Zealand Alpha 1 was told to return to
land on Runway 05R and a request for a second race was made, it is understood the car was
not ready when the 777 began rolling.

Round 2

New Zealand Alpha 1 returned to land on Runway 05R and vacated the runway and lined up for
a second attempt via taxiway Alpha 1 Alpha, this time around the control tower gave
instructions to count down prior to rolling, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and New Zealand Alpha 1 was
cleared for takeoff on Runway 23L as was Black Beauty cleared to roll on parallel runway
23R, this time around Black Beauty picked up a lot of speed and raced down 23R while ZK-OKD
made an earlier rotation than in the previous run, perhaps knowing it had lost the race!
New Zealand Alpha 1 Alpha was then climbing away from Runway 23L and Black Beauty was at
the end of 23R waiting to race back without the 777 and do some extra performance stuff,
including a burn out in front of the control tower and crossing the finish line through the
water canon salute from the Airport Fire service.

I'm going to say it was a tie, Boeing 777 -1- Black Beauty -1-, but I guess the true winner
was the one that went right down the whole runway!
