Large Formations at Warbirds over Wanaka 2018

The civilian manned North American Harvard and Yak 52 teams strutted their stuff proudly across the skies above Wanaka creating quite the spectacle. 

Eleven Harvards gathered for a mass formation flight, ten civilian examples and the single RNZAF historic flight machine NZ1015/ZK-RNZ. Wonderful to see such a large number airborne at once. The Ardmore based Roaring Forties also conducted their polished display.

The Yak 52 team assembled from across the country and like the Harvards flew a very tight, professional routine. Fabulous to see!

Pacific Aerospace 750XL's prepare to depart - UPDATED

Following a pre-delivery shake down flight conducted 06 April, Pacific Aerospace 750XL ZK-KEJ departed Hamilton mid morning 07 April for the Gold Coast on the first leg of its long delivery flight to Poland where it will be registered SP-MOC.

Two Pacific Aerospace 750XL's are being prepared at the manufacturer's Hamilton facility for overseas customers. 

ZK-KDI MSN 206 for the Papua New Guinea Defence Force has recently been granted its Certificate of Airworthiness according to Pacific Aerospace's social media outlets. This first aircraft (of four on order) will be used as a utility transport and medivac aircraft.

ZK-KEJ MSN 220 is destined for delivery to Poland as a parachute jump-ship where it will join MSN 202. ZK-KEJ was photographed wearing its future registration SP-MOC but has since revered to its Kiwi identity.

Miscellaneous from Wanaka 2018

The 30th anniversary Warbirds over Wanaka airshow leveraged much of its hype from the visit of the two USAF F16 Fighting Falcon's along with the other modern military participants.

In addition to the above drawcards, Jurgis Kairys and his high performance Juka aerobatic machine provided a fun filled display. Always a fantastic display!




Jurgis was to have provided and displayed a Polikarpov I-16 Rata however mechanical issues thwarted this little Russian fighter from making its way to NZ. The I-16 and I-153 Chiaka were significant elements of the Warbirds over Wanaka and Alpine Fighter Collection development in the 1990's. 

Replacing the I-16 was a Hispano Buchon masquerading as a Messerchmitt ME109. This example was used in the making of the movie "Dunkirk"

Puma in the streets of Auckland!

Two ex Japan Ground Self Defense Force (Japan Army) VIP transport AS332L Puma helicopters have arrived to Oceania's Ardmore maintenance facility. Both helicopters were transported from the Port of Auckland to Ardmore late morning 06 April 2018. 

The duo have been quickly identified as the following:

00001/ST MSN 2162 
00003/ST MSN 2125

It would appear these helicopters were withdrawn from active service in 2009 following the arrival of EC225's and have been stored at JGSDF Camp Kasumigaura northwest of Narita, Tokyo.

RNZAF participation at Warbirds over Wanaka 2018

The Royal New Zealand Air Force deployed a significant amount of metal to this year's Warbirds over Wanaka air show with the Lockheed P3 Orion being the only aircraft not participating. 

The RNZAF display team "Black Falcons" arrived from Dunedin 29 March with the five Beechcraft Texans conducting a brief sortie before landing. Later in the day the conducted their display practice. On 30 March NZ1404 flew a solo display over Lake Wanaka. 











C130H Hercules NZ7002 was on location from 29 March and parked at the east end of the airfield. It flew its display routine twice that afternoon and was then employed as a photo ship. On 30 March it was loaded with pyrotechnics to carry out its "angel" flare display over the lake and to then act as photo ship for the two RAAF Hawks and USAF F16's, however soon after departure from Wanaka the Hercules suffered an engine issue which saw number one engine shutdown and the aircraft diverted to Christchurch. 




Boeing 757 NZ7571 was based at Christchurch and it flew two practice displays over Wanaka 29 March, the first time it has been displayed at the show for a number of years. 



Agusta A109 NZ3401 arrived from Christchurch 29 March and was placed on static display. 

MRH NH90 NZ3301 and NZ3302 were both well utilised for the show including the duty of carrying airshow founder and aviation legend Sir Tim Wallace at along the crowd line to start the show on both Saturday and Sunday.




6 Squadron SH2G(I) Seasprite NZ3614 conducted displays including the lakeside airshow on Easter Friday. 


Beech King Air 200's NZ7122, NZ7123 and NZ7124 were all noted during the course of the days we were on location providing support to not only RNZAF activities but also USAF personnel associated with their flying activities.
