Worthy Warbirds over Wanaka 2018

Warbirds over Wanaka would not be complete without the addition of iconic aircraft such as the PBY Catalina, ZK-PBY and Douglas DC3 ZK-DAK. The Avro Anson ZK-RRA certainly turns heads and is beautifully presented. Kittyhawk ZK-CAG, Spitfire ZK-SPI and T26 Trojan ZK-JGS were all very well received by the crowd.

Civilian Jets at Warbirds over Wanaka 2018

A surprising lack of civilian warbird jets at Wanaka, especially considering the number of aircraft operational across New Zealand.

Tauranga's Fighter Flights L39 Albatros ZK-EJA was the only one of its type on location. Pity considering the NZ population stands at 5, and none of the 5 L29's were seen with locally based ZK-WBD hidden in a Wanaka hangar and ZK-JET now resident across at Alexandra. De Havilland Vampire ZK-VAM was in town from Christchurch joined by fellow Vampire ZK-RVM from New Plymouth. The L39 and two Vampires conducted flying activities with the L39, flown by Paul "Sticky" Strickland from the USA flew a full on solo display routine.

French participant at Warbirds over Wanaka 2018

New Caledonia based Casa 235 "65" arrived at Wanaka late on the afternoon of 29 March, presumably from its home of Noumea via Whenuapai. It conducted its airshow practice routine 30 March and flew both days of the show displaying its agile flying characteristics. The crew were an enthusiastic bunch eager to share their collective knowledge.

The Casa departed Wanaka 04 April for Whenuapai and Noumea.

USAF C40 09-0540

United States Air Force Boeing 737-7DM(WL) C40C 09-0540 arrived at Whenuapai early on the afternoon of 07 April 2018 from Sydney as "SPAR31". Carrying a US Congressional delegation led by US transport and infrastructure committee chairman Bill Shuster, the C40 departed after dark 08 April for Pago Pago and Honolulu.

This is only the second visit by this particular airframe to NZ. Its first visit was in January 2012 when it spent time at Wellington and Christchurch.

Ah De Havilland at Warbirds over Wanaka 2018

An airshow in New Zealand would be incomplete without participation of De Havilland aircraft and the 30th Anniversary of Warbirds over Wanaka did not disappoint with a gaggle of Tiger Moths flying with a Dominee, Fox Moth and Devon. A De Havilland Canada Chipmunk, N861WP, conducted solo displays.
